Valentino's "Cobra" Brings Silent Drama to Skokie Theatre

Rudy Valentino and Nita Naldi star in the 1925 drama "Cobra" in the first of a series of silent films that will be presented at the Skokie Theatre by the Silent Film Society of Chicago in conjunction with the Skokie Music Foundation.

Originally opened in 1915 as the Niles Center Theatre, the Skokie Theatre has been recently transformed into a state-of-the-art music and theatre venue. The Silent Film Society is excited to be part of the Skokie Theatre's programming for 2008 and welcomes the opportunity to bring several silent films into an intimate setting. All shows begin at 8:00 p.m., and renowned silent film organist Jay Warren will provide live photoplay accompaniment. The series schedule is as follows:

April 25 - "Cobra" starring Rudy Valentino and Nita Naldi
The silver screen gets rd-hot in this rarely seen 1925 drama. Valentino is Count Toriana whose better skills include the ability to effortlessly charm the young ladies, but he gets more than he can handle when a sizzling seductress (Naldi) enters his life.

May 16 - "Down to the Sea in Ships" with Clara Bow and Raymond McKee
Kidnapping, murder, mutiny at sea and hungry sharks -- who could want more? "Ships" is Clara Bow's earliest surviving film. the cinematography of authentic whaling footage is remarkable for its time, but it is 16-year-old Bow that shines in this story.

Sept. 5 - "The Marriage Circle" with Florence Vidor, Monte Blue and Marie Prevost
In this 1924 frisky sex-comedy, Vidor stars as a young woman who suspects her husband (Blue) of having an affair. She enlists her best friend (Prevost) to keep an eye on him, unaware that her husband and best friend are already an item.

Oct. 31 - "Nosferatu" starring Max Schreck and Gustv Von Wangerhiem
Nosferatu, a Symphony of Horror is the dark story of Dracula - Count Orlock. Was the plague of 1838 merely a coincidence, or was it the horrific evil of the Nosferatu? Max Schreck effectively delivers the chilling performance of the famed creature of the night.
