Silent Film Society Presents Chicago in Fundraiser

Special screening of  the 1927 classic will offset costs for reinstallation of the the 3 Manual Grande Theater Pipe Organ.

The Silent Film Society of Chicago is proud to present "Chicago" on Sunday, April 26, 2009 in a special fundraising event at the Portage Theater to welcome the 3 Manual Grande Pipe Organ, which was recently gifted to the Society.  Jay Warren will provide live theater organ accompaniment. The show begins at 3:00 p.m.

Rarely seen, Chicago is the quintessential Roaring Twenties story full of booze, greed, larceny and murder with a stellar performance by Phyllis Haver as witty and sexy Roxie Hart, a gold digger who shoots her lover for jilting her. Hart finds herself in a frenzied media circus when she attempts to finagle her way out of being convicted.

The film is based on a play by Maurine Dallas Watkins called Chicago, or Play Ball. Several versions of the play have been produced for stage and screen, including the 1942 film starring Ginger Rogers and a Broadway production, Chicago: A Musical Vaudeville by Bob Fosse in 1975. More recently, Renee Zellweger played the role of Roxie Hart in the  2002 film version.

Tickets are $15 in advance at the Portage Theater box office, and $20 at the door. The Portage Theater is located at 4050 N. Milwaukee Avenue on Chicago's northwest side.
