Silent Film Society Rescues
Historic 1927 Pipe Organ
SFSC recently acquired the Kimball 3 Manual
Grande Theater pipe organ, which had been sitting collecting dust and covered
over by a stage extension. It was deemed unplayable for nearly five years after
power to its giant wind turbines was disconnected. Beginning last November, the
organ was removed and its chamber components were put in storage. Thanks to the
generous support of volunteers and SFSC members, this instrument begin a new
life. The re-engineered instrument will incorporate existing pipe work and real
percussions coordinated with the latest in electronic switching and digital
sampling. Finally, the organ will be placed on its Barton four-post elevator
lift. The Silent Film Society of Chicago appreciate your support to keep the
voice of silent cinema heard for generations to come.
The Silent Film
Society of Chicago is dedicated to preserving the
silent film heritage by bringing it to today's audiences through its proper
presentation. With 80 percent of all silent film prints gone forever, the
Society's goal is to heighten public awareness to expedite film preservation. In
addition to silent film screenings, the Society's ongoing projects include a
field trip program for children in grades 5 through 12 called Discovering the
Silent Cinema, as well as its highly acclaimed Silent
Summer Film Festival.
This project is
partially supported by a City arts I grant from the city of Chicago dept. of
cultural affairs and the Illinois arts council, a state agency.
